OUIL402 Personal, Professional Practice - Final module evaluation

1.  What learning have you inherited through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied it? Consider differing approaches to contextual/professional research

I have learnt a lot throughout this module. Being made to research other professional work has been a huge benefit to me, both for inspiration for my own briefs and also to help me improve me skills at critically analysing others work, I still struggle with this as I’m not very good at academic writing but I am definitely getting better and will continue to do this over the summer to help me improve further. Although I have not applied the time management skills very well to my own practice and my personal life, I feel like it is a valuable skill that I have learnt which I will try harder to apply next year.

2. What approaches to image making have you developed during this module and what informed such ways of working?

Through my critical research and analysis of what exactly illustration is by looking at contextual references, I have learnt a wide variety of different image making techniques, by looking at different artists and evaluating what I like about their work and what I want to apply to my own work, I think I have made a large collection of work that appeals to me and inspires my own working practice.

3. What strengths can you identify in your practice and how have/will you capitalise on these in the future?

I think one of my main strengths in regards to this brief has definitely been my on going interest in discovering both new illustrators and topics that really inspire and influence me. I have utilised Tumblr a lot more by following illustrators I know I already like and using it to find new ones. I have also started using Pinterest a lot more, as it is a useful way of gathering together different images and organising them to different boards, which is helpful when doing research for different briefs.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your practice and how will you address these in the future?

I think one of my main weaknesses is definitely my time management skills, although I know it is a useful thing to do, I am a very forgetful and unorganised person, so have found it hard to start carrying out the things I have learnt throughout the module. During the summer and next year I intend to apply my time management skills much more to both my practice and my personal life. I intend to start keeping a diary and writing a lot more to-do lists, as I find lists much more helpful than timetables, as I find them too difficult to stick to.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     I want to get much better at time management by keeping a diary and making lists, I expect this to help me be much more organised, which I think will really benefit future briefs.
2.     I want to use a wider variety of resources next year, like screen printing and etching, I expect this to really benefit my practice by giving me a wider variety of skills.
3.     I want to get much better at digital work, like Photoshop and Illustrator, because I think not using digital programs I am really limiting myself.
4.     I really want to refine my tone of voice, I know how to be funny but I want to get better at communicating powerful messages, I think I achieved this with the PPP brief but I intend to get much better at it
5.     I also want to re-start my own Facebook or Tumblr page to put my work onto, so more people can see it. I think being confident and putting myself out there more will definitely benefit me in becoming more confident and being happier with my own work.

OUIL402 - Studio Brief 3 - Presentation

Context of Practice Module - Final evaluation

What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

  • This was the first time I had written a formal essay in a long time so it took me some getting used to writting in that style, but once I got used to it I think I did okay, and I also think it helped me to think how I could anaylse my work when I was blogging it. The practical aspect of the work also helped me to think about how you translate something from a piece of text into something physical, and how to best communicate what you are trying to say in a text and turn it into visual communication. I think I applied this quite well through my comic, as people that I have shown the comic to have found it funny and understood the concept, however I think I can always improve my work and probably could have found a more obvious way of communicating my point.
What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?
  • At the beginning when I was just testing I started using ink, but I found that this was very hard to control and I wanted a clear and controled line quality that I could make sure was precise, so I switched just using pastels and coloured pencils, I found that when I was using oil pastels that the way I drew was more messy and less controlled, both because I was practising drawing from reference, and also because the media doesn't allow for much control. When I finally decided to use pencils I found that the way I developed the concept for the character became a lot more controlled and I found it easier to make decisions on how I wanted her to look.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
  • I think that because this was my first proper comic with narrative that I had completed I wasn't 100% happy with it, however I think one strength of it is that the comic itself has helped me improve the way I think about character and how that links with narrative and how you combine the two to communicate a concept. I think that my interrogation of media and process also helped me to create a good looking final piece, which does communicate my point well, I think that this is a definite strength.
What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how have/will you address these in the future?
  • I think the main weakness was the overall quality of the final piece. Although the illustrations themselves worked quite well I should have spent more time cleaning up my scanned images in photoshop before working on them. The lines around the edge of the work made it obvious it was a scanned in image, and because all the images were not alligned properly when I trimmed the excess paper from the border off it would sometimes come too close to some pieces of work and too far away from others. Next time I aim to spend more time cleaning up my final images in order to make sure they are as neat and clean as possible.
Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
  1. I will try and create a finished product using a method other than digital print, I would most like to use screenprint or risograph printing. I think this will add a different dimention to my work and help me decided what I enjoy working with most.
  2. I want to continue to explore character and narrative in the hopes that I will become a better story teller and be better able to communicate a strong message or opinion through my work.
  3. I will try and use a different media while testing other than coloured pencil, as I have used this for the past few briefs, this will also help my visual skills develop.
  4. I will spend more time making my final pieces look as neat and professional as possible which wil hopefully help me to become more confident with my work
  5. I want to carry on trying to develop my own voice and learn how to better put my own opinions and ideas into my work to create something that is well informed and will make the views think about their own opinions.

Visual Communication Module - Final evaluation

  • What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

With the first brief; That's Pants, being a group project, it really helped me develop my group work skills, although the brief wasn't as successful as we would have hoped, it definitely made me realise the plus and negative sides of working in a group, and the best way to tackle it. Because I decided to use Illustrator for both brief 2 and 3, it really helped me develop my digital skills, because I had really been wanting to learn how to use programs to create better looking digital work, forcing myself to use something that I was not completely comfortable with using helped me to learn how to put my ideas onto the screen and develop them digitally.

  • What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?
Because I wanted to get more practice using it, I decided to use Illustrator for brief 3, after I quite enjoyed using it during brief 2. Because of the way that Illustrator works, I had to make my work quite bold and made up mainly of shapes to work with the vector program. I enjoyed this limitation and the way that it made me think about how I would communicate my own personal way of working on a platform that I'm not used to using. While I was developing the concept of my work I had to keep in mind that I would be working digitally, so it wouldn't be as easy to have shading and tone, so I would have to use shape to create this, I enjoyed the challenge of having to think about how my work would translate to digital and having this influence my development.
  • What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think that because I have been using Illustrator more, my skills creating digital work have greatly improved, especially in brief 3, I thought these outcomes were my best yet, not only because of the aesthetic I created working digitally but also the ability to create and maintain a colour palette and co ordinate it throughout your work to create a series, which is a lot harder to do when working non-digitally. I intend to capitalise on these by continuing to work digitally to further improve my work and help me to become more comfortable working digitally. I also want to start developing work and testing out ideas using Illustrator instead of hand drawing it, because I think it'd be easier to then translate this into finished pieces.

  • What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I noticed a couple of weaknesses in brief 3, I was happy with the way that my postcards and stamps turned out but then I had trouble creating a final A2 poster that I was happy with. I knew what I wanted to include in the poster but I found it difficult to plan out and make a composition that I was happy with, as I'm not really used to working at such a large scale with such a specific subject matter. I think that the best way to address these problems I am having with large scale composition would be to practice scaling up smaller work and also taking more time to plan out future large pieces of work. I think that working digitally will also help me with this, especially when using vectors, because it is easier to scale work up, while still keeping the same amount of quality and detail.

  • Identify 5 things that you will do differently next time and what you expect to gain from doing these?
  1. I intend to be a bit more adventurous with my final outcomes, I want to employ different ways of working, like more etching and screen printing, and also trying out Risograph printing, as I think this will help to identify and follow a stronger direction that I want my work to take.
  2. I will again keep pushing myself to focus more on development work, although I think I have done this well in brief 3, I intend to keep working at it and producing more to help influence my final outcomes.
  3. I will work harder to incorporate things that I have learnt from different modules, like skills from Visual Language into my work so that I can continue to find new and interesting ways of working that work well for me
  4. I also want to try and communicate more of myself into my work; more of my opinions, things I like and dislike and more of my humour, as I think this has worked well where I have employed it in previous briefs.
  5. Finally I intend on planning my time more, although I finished the last brief in good time, I want to carry on doing this and keep creating lists and start making more timetables to help me manage my time.

Visual Narrative Module - Final evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
This brief helped me develop my research and evaluation skills, having to do Studio Brief 1 and collect as much physical evidence as possible in order to come up with a subject matter for the next brief and to help the project develop showed me the importance of extensive research prior to beginning a brief in order to just stimulate ideas. I learnt that constantly gathering physical research like photos and simply sitting somewhere and observing can help generate loads of different ideas and help you to develop a project if you get stuck. I think I applied this very well during my project, because after my first time of just sitting and observing I got a bit stuck for ideas, but after my second time sitting in Trinity and just watching people and taking notes of things I found interesting, helped me to come up with a project that I became really interested in and really liked the outcomes.

2. What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?
When I was just putting down my initial ideas of a concept rather than thinking about the actual visual aesthetic of the ideas I just used a pencil to quickly keep track of my ideas or things I thought could develop into a full illustration, but as I started to think about what I wanted to my illustrations to communicate, I wanted them to be funny and kind of hectic looking, I changed the media I used to better suite what I wanted my images to say. At first I tried using a brush pen and doing quick and not very neat sketches with block colours and no texture. After lots of experimenting with this one of the images I did, where I overlapped two block colours, made me decide I wanted to screen print my final book. After this I started to make my images look a bit cleaner and made more of a uniform line quality in order to make it easier to screen print, however I think this took away from how I originally wanted my work to come across.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think the biggest strength in my work is that I can make people laugh. A lot of the feedback I received in the crit was that my work made people laugh and they could either relate to the characters I portrayed in my work or that they knew someone exactly like that. I want to continue making humorous work but also make work that has more a specific message. In this brief I made work that satirised our youth culture but didn't particularly have a clear purpose or message, other than to make people laugh. I want to combine humor and also work that communicates something important.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I think that in general I sometimes lack the quantity of development work that is needed, sometimes I tend to only develop my ideas a little bit and when I find something I really like, stick to it rather than try to really improve it. I get too excited about creating the finished product rather than spending time developing lots and lots of ideas to create the best possible outcome. Although I was very happy with the outcome of my final book for this project I wish I had spent more time experimenting with media or possible materials for my book, although I think that what I came out with in the end did in fact communicate what I wanted it to, I think I could have found a different media that allowed me to spend more time on making my actual book into something interesting and different. In the future I will spend more time exploring different ideas rather than focussing on one and just using one media that I think works best.

5. Identify 5 things you will do differently next time and what you expect to gain from doing these?
Next time I plan to spread my time more equally between research, developing and creating a finished piece of work. I want to explore lots of different alternatives to creating work and create something that looks completely different to what I have made before. I think that if I do this I will begin to find more and more ways of working that bring out my ability to entertain people and make people think with my work. Balancing my time equally will help to make all aspects of my briefs the best they can be, doing more research will better inform my ideas and help me come up with more, combining this with more experimentation and documentation will help make me decide what method of working best suites me.
